The proton transport properties are strongly associated with the water uptake of the ion exchange membranes. There are two considerable approaches: one is a change of the rate constant of the proton transfer step based on interactions between mobile protons and acidic groups, the other one is a change of morphology in microstructure. In this study, novel block copolymers based on partially sulfonated poly(arylene ether sulfone)s (SPAESs) were prepared by a two-stage direct polymerization. First hydrophilic and hydrophobic oligomers with the desired lengths and the end-groups were synthesized from sulfonated dihalides, dihalides and diols, then the block copolymers having different proton exchange capacities were prepared by varying the stoichiometry of these oligomers. Resulting copolymers were characterized by various analytic methods, and their membrane properties were examined thoroughly for fuel cell applications. |
