The free surface of a supported hydrogel film will become unstable to formation of sharp creases when placed under sufficiently large compressive swelling stresses. Much research efforts seek to exploit this instability and thermodynamics of hydrogel to design smart organic materials surfaces, however many questions remain about mechanism and dynamics of crease formation. To better understand this process, formation and disappearance of surface creases on gel layers are investigated using thin temperature-responsive poly(N-isopropyl acrylamide) copolymer hydrogels. In addition, these studies provide a simple and flexible route to prepare smart surfaces with chemical patterns that can be reversibly "erased" and regenerated on demand. |
