Carbon cryogels are a special class of carbon materials with a high porosity and surface area. Carbon cryogels can be used in a wide variety of applications ranging from absorbents to anodes in lithium ion batteries or electrodes for supercapacitors and fuel cells because they are electrically conductive and have the typical aerogel properties, such as a low density, an open porosity and a high surface area. In this study, the carbon cryogels were prepared using a sustainable natural polymer membrane, bacterial cellulose, which has a monolithic macroporous 3D-network structure as well as a high purity, crystallinity and mechanical strength. The characteristics of these cryogels were also investigated in this study. The carbon cryogels exhibited a great potential for application as the gas diffusion layer in fuel cells because of their high electrical conductivity, macroporous structure and hydrophobicity. |
