Shape Control for Aggregation Studies -Indoline Chromophores |

Conjugated organic push-pull compounds typically have high dipole moments and as a consequence tend to aggregate with each other, which in turn can diminish their NLO response. Consequently there is a need to make structural modifications to many basic chromophores that are designed to: (i) minimize aggregation between the chromophores (ii) improve their solubility in non-polar solvents and (iii) increase their NLO figure of merit. We have made such structural modifications to a suite of zwitterionic chromophores, including shape control of the π-conjugated system (prolate to oblate) via the incorporation of bulky substituents. UV-vis spectroscopic data and X-ray structural data has been obtained for the compounds will be used to support the validity of the proposed strategy. |
