In this work, we fabricated carbon fiber through the simple heat treatment carbonization process at 1500 °C and 1700 °C. The carbonized henequen (HQ) and filter paper (FP) at different temperature were characterized by AFM and SEM on a nanometer scale. Carbonized HQ and FP showed impurity removal and heat-shrinkage with the heat treatment and it was getting more when the temperature was increased from 1500 to 1700 °C. However, when the HQ was carbonized at 1500 °C, numerous alkali earth metal particles such as Ca, K were exposed on the surface. These particles can be expected to produce a negative effect of carbonized materials, therefore, in order to use HQ as the precursor of carbon materials appropriate surface treatments was required comparing to FP. As a result, we have shown that carbon fibers based on FP can be a good candidate for the development of environmentally friendly carbon materials for electrodes or other applications. |
