Chromium is known to cause human injury such as dermatitis, perforation of nasal septum and lung cancer. Phenol-based activated carbon (AC), which has excellent ability to remove harmful substances in aqueous solution, was used to adsorb the chromium. The surface of the AC was fluorinated to improve Cr adsorption capacity at room temperature using F2 and N2 gas mixtures. When compared to pristine AC, the specific surface area and total pore volume of fluorinated AC increased by 24.7% and 55.8%, respectively. In addition, it was confirmed that the fluorinated AC adsorbent presented a chromium adsorption efficiency of 98% at an initial concentration of 300 mg / L. Finally, it was indicated that the fluorination of AC is suitable for effective removal of chromium. |
