Porous core/sheath composite nanofibers fabricated by coaxial electrospinning as a potential mat for drug release system |

This study focuses fabrication and characterization of porous core/sheath structured composite nanofibers with the core of blend of salicylic (SA) and poly (ethylene glycol) (PEG) and the sheath of poly (lactic acid) (PLA) by a dual-capillary electrospinning system. The results of water contact angle measurements, field-emission scanning electron microscopy, and transmission electron microscopy indicated that the feed rates of the core and sheath strongly affected the stability of core/sheath structure and porous density of obtained composite nanofibers, which, in turn, significantly influenced their SA release characteristics. At lower ratio of feed rate of core and sheath, more complete core/sheath structure of composite nanofibers with higher porous density on its surface were formed resulting in sustained release of SA during 5 days.The release of SA from porous core/sheath composite nanofibers was described by one-dimensional Fickian diffusion mechanism. |
