Synthesis and properties of thiol-functionalized multi-walled carbon nanotube/gold nanoparticle composites |

Multi-walled carbon nanotubes (MWNTs) were functionalized with 4-mercaptobenzoic acid in a mild polyphosphoric acid (PPA)/phosphorus pentoxide (P2O5) as “direct” electrophilic substitution reaction medium. Since thiol group is known to have a strong interaction with gold, functionalized MWNT (F-MWNT)/gold nanoparticle composites were prepared in tetrahydrofuran (THF). Scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and transmission electron microscopy (TEM) images showed that gold nanoparticles are uniformly distributed on the surface of F-MWNTs. Fourier-transform infrared (FT-IR) spectroscopy, thermogravimetric analysis (TGA), elemental analysis (EA), x-ray diffraction (XRD), and UV-vis spectroscopy were used to characterize the nanocomposites. Due to high conductivity of gold nanoparticles, the nanocomposites are expected to display improved conductivity and be useful for electrodes. |
