Water-soluble conjugated polyelectrolytes: Optical platform for fluorescence DNA biosensors |

Various kinds of biosensors using optical and electrochemical transduction schemes have been demonstrated. One successful DNA sensing scheme is based on the fluorescence resonance energy transfer (FRET) method. Electrostatic interaction between cationic polyelectrolytes and negatively charged DNA can be coordinated to give rise to efficient FRET for sequence-specific DNA assays. Two same electronic structures with/without molecular spacer (or bumper) are compared in functioning as a donor in the FRET scheme. Fluorescence quenching of the acceptor in the electrostatic DNA-polymer complex is a main concern to improve sensor efficiency. This study can show one important example of structure-property relationships for the optimized FRET-biosensing assays. Structure modifications such as molecular bumper can fine-tune the energy transfer process in FRET-based DNA sequence detection. |
