Ionic Polymer-Metal Composite (IPMC), which is composed of ionic polymer membrane, and two metal electrodes, has small size, light weight, outstanding flexibility, and large displacement when voltage is applied across electrodes. Because of these advantages, IPMC has been studied extensively as bending actuator, and applied for biomimetic or medical usage. In addition, IPMC also can be used as bending sensor because mechanical deformation induced temporary electrical potential difference. For developing IPMC as sensor, we suggested novel fluoropolymer membrane for alternative ion exchange membrane, which has shorter side chain than commercial Nafion. For the reason, it can be expected that this membrane has more ionic groups than Nafion. Membrane properties, such as ion exchange capacity and water uptake, are measured for comparing and analyzing the ion exchange membrane. In our research, IPMC sensor test was performed to confirm their sensing ability as novel IPMC sensor. |
