Spectroscopic and X-ray scattering methods are used to study structure and chain conformation of di-alkylamine intercalated into layered silicates such as montmorillonite (MMT) by monitoring frequency shifts of the CH2 and NH2 vibrations band as a function of intercalated chain amounts. Amounts of intercalated di-alkylamine observed with Thermal Gravimetric Analyzer (TGA), are controlled by pH in bulk solution (water/ethanol/silicate/di-alkylamine). As chain amount in layerd silicates increases, the intercalated chains adopt a more ordered structure resulting from an increase in trans/gauche conformation ratio of alkyl chain group and d-spacing of MMT.
