The poly(3,3’-bis(cinnamoyloxy)-4,4’-biphenylene hexafluoroisopropylidene-diphthalimide (6FDA-HAB-CI) was prepared as thin nano films using spin casting onto ITO glass and Silicon-wafer. The film surfaces were treated doubly by rubbing and linearly polarized ultraviolet light (LPUVL) exposure. With these doubly surface treated films, optical phase retardation, LC alignment direction, surface morphology, and anchoring energy were measured. Optical retardation result shows that the change of retardation is governed mainly by LPUVL exposure in doubly surface treated films by rubbing and LPUVL exposure. However, LC alignment direction was determined only by rubbing. In conclusion, the extent of concentration of anisotropic molecular orientation on the top surface in the alignment layer film determines anchoring behavior. In addition, anchoring behavior is also determined by competition between the polymer main chain and side chain to interact with LC molecules anisotropically. |
