제목 Conformation of polymer chains in Langmuir-Blodgett films
초록 The application of thin polymer films increases rapidly in recent years but little is known about the conformation of polymer chains in thin films whose thickness is smaller than the unperturbed dimension of polymer chains. Using deuterated poly(methyl methacrylate) (d8-PMMA) we measured by small angle neutron scattering (SANS) the chain conformation of polymer chains in LB film, which would be the best available model system of 2-dimensionally confined polymer chains. Before experiment, we fractionated the h-PMMA and d-PMMA by using HPLC to remove byproduct and also to obtain the similar molecular weights of the h-PMMA and d-PMMA then we characterized the molecular weights and polydispersities of fractionated samples through using MALDI-TOF MASS. Neutron reflectivity experiments of alternating h-PMMA and d8-PMMA LB film showed that the interlayer mixing did not occur during the multiplayer LB film deposition. Then the radius of gyration of PMMA was measured by SANS of the LB film made from the mixture of h-PMMA and d8-PMMA. The scattering function shows that the polymer chains have near Gaussian conformation parallel to the film plane and the radius of gyration is much larger than that in bulk.
