제목 | A Study on the Characterization of PP-g-MAH and Their Applications |
초록 | Polyolefin graft copolymers can be produced by reactive melt extrusion or solution process. We are interested in the development of polypropylenes with improved properties. In the grafting processes, active radicals of initiators produced by thermal decomposition subtract hydrogens on polypropylene or cause chain scission and comonomers are grafted on polypropylene. PP-g-MAH with polar maleic anhydride as the grafted comonomer is a useful compatibilizer in polymer alloys and polymer composites, especially when an excess quantity of inorganic fillers are involved. PP-g-MAH, however, is not easy to prepare. Moreover, its major characteristics such as mechanical properties and adhesive strength are strongly dependent on the kinds of initiatiors and additives and other reaction conditions. The differences in the materials characteristics are considered to be caused from the graft ratio of the polar comonomers and the structure of the grafts, as well as the intrinsic properties of the base polypropylene including the molecular weight and polydispersity. In this study, we investigated the effect of characteristics of PP-g-MAH on the final polymer composite materials. For this, several samples of PP-g-MAH were first prepared by solution process and reactive melt extrusion under various reaction conditions. Their chemical and physical properties were determined by spectroscopic methods of FT-IR and NMR, GPC, and DSC, etc. The polar monomers that were grafted on the polypropylene were readily identified by FT-IR spectrometry, but their detailed chemical structures and graft position were determined with NMR spectroscopic methods. Then various PP/TALC composites were prepared and their electron microscopic morphologies, mechanical properties, and adhesion properties were measured and the correlation between the chemical and physical properties and the end-use properties including the mechanical properties and adhesion properties were discussed. |
