Carbonate ion sensing electrode membrane based on poly(vinyl chloride) and its property characteristics |

A series of poly(vinyl chloride) (PVC) membranes containing a carbonate ion sensible ionophore, a lipophilic additive, and a plasticizer in various compositions was prepared and then investigated in detail in the aspects of properties and ion-selective-electrode performance. This study found that the the glass transition temperature Tg varies sensitively with changing the composition in the PVC membrane. In particular, loading of the plasticizer showed a great impact to lower the Tg of the PVC membrane. Moreover, the plasticizer loadings influenced very much the carbonate sensing performance of the PVC membrane; as the plasticizer loading increased, the membrane’ ion sensing performance was improved. On the other hand, the ionophore and lipophilic additive loadings were found to affect the PVC membrane’ Tg but their impacts to change the Tg were not high in comparison to that of the plasticizer. |
