The polymerization activity of bis(salicylaldiminate)cobalt(II) complexes, of the type 1, with different co-catalysts under butadiene atmosphere has been studied. Different organoaluminium co-catalysts in the activation of butadiene were involved in the investigation. In particular, the effect of reaction parameters such as temperature, the type of salicylaldiminate ligand in the cobalt precursor, the Al/Co molar ratio, the effect of butadiene concentration was studied. The catalysts evidenced very high activity yielding polybutadiene chains with low polydispersity index and moderately high number average molecular weights. Polybutadiene chains produced was found to have polymer chains from 1,2- and 1,4- additions. Polymers from 1,4-addition was found to be the major fraction, that too with very high cis- content.
