Alignment of LC molecules at the substrate surface refers to the orientation of the main director of LC at the surface. For the alignment of LC molecules at the substrate surface, various kinds of methods were investigated, such as rubbing, oblique evaporation of SiO2, Langmuir-Blodgett (LB) method. In general, the alignment of LC molecules is realized by rubbing a thin organic film, usually polyimide. Such polymer film surfaces need to be treated if they are to produce a uniform alignment of LC molecules with a defined range of pretilt angle values. In here, LC alignment on the polymer film surfaces treated by various ways will be discussed. |
