제목 Algal Cultivation using Floating Photobioreactors with Selectively Permeable Materials
초록 Biofuels from microalgae have been considered as potent alternatives to petroleum, but there are concerns on economic feasibility and sustainability of mass production of algal biofuels. Floating photobioreactors (PBRs) could improve the economic feasibility and sustainability in the cultivation sector by integration of marine resources into the culture systems. PBRs equipped with selectively permeable materials (SPM) that transmit particles smaller than microalgae could also utilize nutrients in seawater. SPM-PBRs with different materials were built used in an artificial marine condition for cultivation of a green microalga, Tetraselmis sp. MBEyh01L. Up to 16 g/m2/d of biomass productivity was achieved using seawater as the sole source of nutrients. The results show the feasibility of SPM-PBRs for sustainable algal biomass production, and improving form factor, scaling up, etc. will contribute to better economic feasibility and commercialization of mass algal biofuel production.
