Hybrid (QDs/dye) sensitized TiO2 nanofibrous excitonic solar cells |

Quantum dot-sensitized solar cells (QDSCs) are of great interest, but show much lower energy conversion efficiency than dye-sensitized solar cells (DSCs). The additional molecular dye adsorption on the quantum dot-sensitized TiO2 surface may be beneficial in extending the light harvesting wavelength of QDs-sensitizers and improve the hole carrier extraction from QDs to electrolyte. Herein, we report the strategy of hybrid (CdS QDs/N719-dye) sensitized solar cells using TiO2 nanofibrous photoanode. Since the fibrous photoanode provides more room for both sensitizer loading and electrolyte penetration, compared to conventional TiO2 particulate electrodes. An amorphous conformal thin TiO2 passivation layer was also coated in between the QDs and the dyes to protect the QDs from photocorrosion through contact with iodine redox mediators. We found that the QDSCs showed significant improvement in both Jsc and Voc upon the additional inclusion of the molecular dyes. |
