Facilitated transport phenomena are attractive in improving mass transport of a specific component as carrier-mediated transport occurs in addition to normal Fickian transport due to reversible interaction of carrier. First, the facilitated transport concept has been thus applied to separation membranes like olefin/paraffin mixtures. The reversible interaction of both Ag ions and Ag nanoparticles activated by electron acceptor with olefin (but not with paraffin) makes them a potential candidate as an olefin carrier, resulting in good separation performance. Secondly, this concept has been also applied for dye-sensitized solar cells (DSCs) to increase the ionic conductivity of I3-/I-, a typical redox couple, in polymer electrolyte. Thus, it is found that the facilitated transport concept is a very powerful tool to increase the mass transport of a specific component, which can be further extended to various applications including analyzing proton conductivity in PEMs. |
