Woodfordia fruticosa Kurz (Lythraceae) is used in the treatment of various ailments in traditional medicines in Nepal. Flowers of this plant are used in the treatment of a number of ailments, including inflammatory diseases. In present study, DPPH radical scavenging, nitric oxide scavenging and metal chelating activity of different solvent fractions and gallic acid from W. fruticosa were carried out. Gallic acid, isolated from EtOAc extract of W. fruticosa flower showed strongest DPPH radical scavenging activity, however it’s NO scavenging and metal chelating ability was lower than ethyl acetate and aqueous fractions. Aqueous fraction showed highest metal chelating and NO scavenging ability followed by ethyl acetate fraction. However, chloroform and hexane fractions showed poor antioxidant ability in all the tested systems. |
