The influence of doping CuO on the properties of 8 mol% yttria-stabilized zirconia (YSZ) was investigated. The YSZ electrolytes doped with different Cu contents were applied to a solid oxide fuel cell. Doping CuO promotes a densification of the YSZ electrolyte by acting as a sintering aid as well as increases the oxygen vacancy in the YSZ electrolyte. It is found that the optimum Cu contents are 100 ppm at sintering temperature 1400 °C. The YSZ electrolyte doped with 100 ppm Cu shows 0.0196 Scm-1 and 0.5103 Wcm-2 at 800 °C in the ionic conductivity and maximum power density, respectively. The power density of the cell based on the YSZ electrolyte doped with 100 ppm Cu is about 1.5 times higher than the cell based on the pure YSZ electrolyte. The open circuit voltage (OCV) is also highest in the YSZ sample with 100 ppm Cu, indicating it is better than the pure YSZ sample concerning a densification. Hence, the introduction of CuO into the YSZ electrolyte can improve its electrochemical properties. |
