EVA/PI/EVA tri-layer separator with thermal shutdown function for sodium-ion batteries |

Separators in ion battery have critical functions which not only separate the electrodes but also permit ion flow through their porous structure. In additional, shutdown function is required to prevent thermal runaway caused by battery overcharging. In this study, EVA/PI/EVA tri-layer separator with thermal shutdown function is fabricated by easy and simple dip-coating method for Na-ion batteries. In order to generate open pore structure PEPEG (polyethylene-block-poly (ethylene glycol)) is used as polymeric pore generator. Then the pores of EVA layers can be blocked at specific temperature where EVA melt. Furthermore, the separator has high thermal stability. Thermal shrinkage of EVA/PI/EVA separator is rarely observed even at 150℃. The separator also shows high wettability to the liquid electrolytes and has good ion conductivity compared to a commercialized polyethylene separator. These results suggest that EVA/PI/EVA tri-layer separator is a good candidate for Na-ion batteries. |
