Enhanced antibacterial performance of silica-cationic polymer core-shell nanoparticles |

The poly[2-(tert-butylaminoethyl) methacrylate-co-ethylene glycol dimethacrylate] (poly(TBAM-co-EGDMA)) modified silica nanoparticles were synthesized by vapor deposition polymerization in a vacuum condition. To control the size of silica-poly(TBAM-co-EGDMA) core-shell nanoparticles, colloidal silica nanoparticles of different diameters (11, 22, and 44 nm) were used as a core material. The fabricated silica-polycation core-shell nanoparticles had the uniform polymer shell with thickness of about 3 nm. These core-shell nanoparticles were evaluated as an antimicrobial agent against Gram-negative Escherichia coli and Gram-positive Staphylococcus aureus. The biocidal performance test demonstrated that the silica-polycation core-shell nanoparticle had enhanced antimicrobial properties compared to several micro-meter sized bulk polycations and this core-shell nanoparticles showed excellent anti-bioadhesion on glass slide. |
