Chitosan/PEG hydrogel films having both temperature and pH sensitivities were prepared by blending chitosan with polyethylene glycol (PEG). PEG was added to improve film properties, such as thermal, mechanical, and swelling properties. The crosslinking of the hydrogels was carried out by using a low toxicity cross-linking agent, genipin. The swelling behavior was studied by immersing the hydrogel films in various buffers at 25 and 37°C, respectively. The chitosan/PEG blend hydrogel showed both temperature and pH sensitivities. The degree of swelling decreased generally as the genpin contents increased for the same soaking period. |
