Appropriately Released Bioactive Molecules for Pharmaceutical and Tissue Engineering Applications |

In recent years, controlled release of bioactive molecules is very common concept in pharmaceutical and tissue engineering fields. However, little is known regarding the appropriate release profiles for optimized effect of the target purposes, because of the rapid activity change of bioactive molecules; the lack of well-defined delivery matrix that can preserve their bioactivity for sufficient period, as well as precisely regulate the release behavior of the molecules. In this presentation, our current studies to determine the optimum release profile for each purpose will be discussed as follows: i) Controlling oxygen release from hollow microparticles for prolonged cell survival in tissue engineering 3D matrix; ii) Development of porous beads to provide regulated BMP-2 stimulation for varying durations: In vitro and in vivo studies for new bone formation; iii) Lidocaine/multivalent ion complex as a potential strategy for prolonged local anesthesia. |
