Fabrication and Characterization of Polymer-Stabilized Coatable Polarizer |

Sunset Yellow FCF (H-SY) was self-assembled to oriented anisotropic films. The molecular packing structures and optical behaviors of the assembled H-SY film were investigated by the combined techniques of microscopy, scattering and spectroscopy. Photo-polymerization of acrylic acid (AA) was conducted to stabilize the oriented H-SY films and to minimize the possible defects after coating the H-SY/H2O solution. Utilizing the wide-angle X-ray diffraction, H-SY crystalline unit cell of the assembled H-SY film was determined to be monoclinic. The molecular arrangements were further confirmed by polarized Fourier transform infrared and polarized ultraviolet spectroscopy. The polymer-stabilized H-SY films showed good mechanical and chemical stabilities in addition to the high polarizerbility. Patterned polarizers were further fabricated by applying a photo-mask during photo-polymerization of AA, which may open new doors in optoelectronic devices. |
