제목 Comparison of Transport Properties of Nafion® based Nanocomposite Membrane for Direct Methanol Fuel Cells
초록 Direct Methanol Fuel Cells (DMFCs) are the promising candidate for the portable and electric vehicle power sources. However, methanol crossover is the major obstacle o be commercialized as it results in depolarization losses at the cathode and conversion loss due to fuel loss.
To minimize methanol crossover and to improve cell performance, we modified the existing Nafion® membrane with fillers, which have layered structure. We used 2 types of layered fillers to introduce tortuous paths for methanol transport. One was montmorillonite (MMT) as a non-conducting particles, and the other was zirconium sulphophenyl phosphonate (ZrSPP) as a conducting inorganic filler. The transport properties such as methanol permeability, electro-osmotic drag, and ionic conductivity were discussed in relation to cell performance. The methanol permeability was measured using a differential refractive index detection method and electro-osmotic drag measurement was carried out using a special cell, which was utilized by Zawodizinski. The current interrupt method was employed for ion-conductivity measurement at the different degrees of hydration. Membrane electrode assembly (MEA) was fabricated by directly spraying Pt black catalysts on composite membrane. Unit cell (3×3cm2) performance was tested using 2M∼10M methanol as fuel and high purity O2.
