Silica nanoparticles (SiO2) with six different elemental nanodomains (MnO2, Fe2O3, CuO, ZnO, CeO2 and SeO2) were fabricated via sol-gel method to accurately assess the element-dependent cytotoxicity. The size, shape and nanodomain content of nanodomain-decorated SiO2 nanoparticles (ND-SiO2 NPs) were uniform, which made it possible to conduct a comparative study of the element-dependent nanotoxicity. The cellular uptake, mitochondrial dysfunction and cell death mechanism were investigated toward different mammalian cells.
