Organic solar cells with carbon nanotubes replacing both ITO and PEDOT |

Plastic bulk heterojunction solar cells are demonstrated where both ITO and PEDOT are replaced by carbon nanotubes (CNTs). Recent results on such solar cells are discussed and the general optical, energetic and electrical properties of the nanotube electrodes are investigated using UPS, Seebeck measurements, spectroscopic ellipsometry and other techniques. We demonstrate efficiencies as high as 2.6 % for a cell structure of CNTs/PEDOT/P3HT:PCBM/Al and of 1.4% for a similar device without even PEDOT. Optimization strategies for such a CNT-based organic solar cell as well as surprisingly high efficiencies in other solar cell structures (CIGS, CdTe, etc.) in which we have successfully replaced transparent conductors with CNTs are also discussed. |
