Polymer electrolyte membrane (PEM) fuel cells have attracted much attention as energy conversion systems for vehicles. However, high cost and low durability of PEMFCs have hindered the highly efficient technologies from being fully implemented and commercialized, mainly due to the use of noble platinum catalyst in the cathodes. To reduce the noble Pt usage, platinum and nickel (Pt-Ni) alloy catalysts with various shapes have been developed over the past years. Here, we report Ga-doped PtNi octahedral nanoparticles on carbon support (Ga-PtNi/C) as a highly stable and active ORR catalyst in PEMFCs. The Ga-PtNi/C not only showed remarkable enhancement in an initial ORR performance, but also exhibited a great shape stability in a voltage-cycling test while preserving high Ni concentration in the nanoparticles. Furthermore, we fabricated a membrane electrode assembly (MEA) to demonstrate the possibility of using Ga-PtNi/C in practical applications. |
