Ionic Polymer-Metal Composite (IPMC) actuator, consist of an ion exchange membrane (IEM) sandwiched between two noble metal electrodes, has relatively light weight and shows large displacements in low voltage at water-swollen state. Thus the IPMC is utilized in various potential applications such as biomedical micro devices and artificial muscles. However, the performance of the IPMC is gradually decrease during actuation due to the evaporation of water in actuator membrane, and this causes serious decline to the life time of the actuator. To enhance the life time of the IPMC actuator, we introduced ionic liquids, which are highly stable and non-volatile materials, as the alternative solvent that impregnated in the IPMC membrane. |
