Passive DMFC systems were fabricated based on Nafion® 117 and sulfonated polyimide-silica nanocomposite (SPI-SiO2-1). Some MeOH concentrations, 1, 2, 3 and 5 M MeOH, were used as fuel for comparative study of passive DMFC systems. Electrochemical performance was improved as MeOH concentration increased up to 3 M. However, passive DMFC system showed rapid reduction of electrochemical performance above 5 M MeOH, because highly-permeated MeOH content resulted in a severe catalyst poisoning. SPI-SiO2-1 with low MeOH permeability acted as a better MeOH barrier than Nafion® 117. The maximum power density of passive DMFC with SPI-SiO2-1 was higher than that of Nafion® 117. This result showed that SPI-SiO2-1 may be an alternative proton exchange membrane for passive DMFC operated under high MeOH concentration with high energy density. |
