Synthesis of Inorganic/Organic Hybrid Block Copolymers for PEM Fuel Cells by RAFT Polymerization |

Proton exchange membrane fuel cells (PEMFCs) are one of the promising energy sources that transform the chemical energy to electrical energy by electrochemical reaction. These PEMFCs membranes have to be stable in long operation time while exhibiting excellent proton conductivities at high temperature. Herein, hybrid block copolymers consisting of polymethylsilsesquioxane (PMSSQ) and polystyrenesulfonate (PSS) were designed as new model materials for PEMFCs. To synthesize such hybrid block copolymers via RAFT polymerization, a chain transfer agent (CTA) exhibiting a trialkoxy silane group was synthesized, followed by co-condensing with MTMS to yield a polymeric CTA. Pentafluorophenylstyrenesulfonate was then polymerized under RAFT conditions. Afterwards film membranes were fabricated and the pentafluorophenyl group was liberated resulting in the proton conducting sulfonate moieties. The detailed synthesis and characterization of these promising new materials will be discussed. |
