Porosity of EBI treated natural fibres and interfacial properties of biocomposites |

Natural fibres are used as reinforcing fillers in polymeric matrix composites. The major problem in using natural fibre is the poor interfacial bonding between natural fibre and polymer matrix. The objective of this investigation is to determine the effect of electron beam irradiation on the interfacial bonding properties. The surface properties of henequen fiber irradiated by EB with different doses were investigated by mercury porosimeter, AFM and DSC. The interfacial shear strength of polypropylene composite reinforced henequen fibre was measured by the short beam shear test. EBI changed the morphology of the fibres; removing impurities creating pore and producing fiber fibrillation. The increase of porosity and surface area of EBI treated natural fibre contributes to a better adhesion between natural fibre and polymer matrix resulting in higher performance of biocomposites. |
