Molecular self-assembly and self-organization of amphiphilic molecules have attracted much attention for their great potential as advanced functional materials. Polycatenar-type 1H-imidazole amphiphiles, consisting of a 1H-imidazole head connected through a benzene ring to multiple polar ethylene oxide groups, were synthesized and their self-assembling properties were investigated. The liquid crystalline properties of polycatenar-type compounds were investigated by differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) and polarized optical microscopy (POM). The compound exhibited a birefringent mesophase with a nonspecific texture under the POM at room temperature. Structural analysis of mesophase was performed by X-ray diffraction measurement (XRD). In XRD results, the compounds exhibited highly ordered rectangular columnar phases at room temperature. |
