Characteristics of Nanocomposite Membrane Using ZrSPP for Direct Methanol Fuel Cells |

The methanol crossover is the major obstacle to DMFC commercialization because of depolarization losses at the cathode and conversion loss due to fuel loss. The Nafion® was suffering from permeation of liquid methanol fuel. So the membranes were fabricated from the nanocomposite of Nafion® containing zirconium sulphophenyl phosphate (ZrSPP) as a solid proton conductor to reduce methanol crossover. The methanol permeability of the modified membranes were found to be at least 50% lower than Nafion® due to the longer diffusion path. The proton conductivity (σ) was determined by AC impedance spectroscopy (IM6, Zahner). X-ray diffraction (Rigaku Rad-C4037A1) was carried out to observe exfoliated state of composite membrane. The unit cell (5cm2) performance was tested using methanol as fuel and high purity O2. |
