Most research on the toxicology of biomaterials for layer-by-layer(LbL) assembly has only sectionally focused on the effects of cells that are used for specific applications. There has been much less research on the toxicology(and/or toxicity test) of materials at mixed condition in which the building blocks of LbL are deliberately placed within complex form. Here we present recent research on early stage of immunotoxicity, along with data on a range of LbL-based biomaterials that are positive charged, negative charged, neutral and complexes type. Our research shows that each types of biomaterials can stimulate and/or suppress the immune responses, and that their compatibility with the Peripheral Blood Mononuclear Cell (PBMC) is largely determined by their surface chemistry. Acquainting these factors can significantly reduce the possible immunotoxicity of biomaterials for LbL and make them useful nanofilms for biomedical applications. |
