Magnetorheological (MR) fluids which possess unique ability to solidify into pasty consistency with the aid of an magnetic field and to re-liquefy without an external field, have great perspectives in designing damper active systems, torque transducer and MR polishing, etc. Among various potential MR candidates such as magnetite, maghemite, and carbonyl iron (CI), CI particles have attracted great attention due to their high saturation magnetization as well as appropriate particle size. However, the CI particles have to be modified due to the large density before applying for MR suspension. In this work, a novel magnetic carbonyl iron/polystyrene (CI/PS) composite with nano-scaled PS spheres sprinkled on the surface of the CI particles was fabricated. Physical properties as well as the MR behaviours were investigated via SEM, TEM and a rotational rheometer (Physica MC 300, Stuttgart, Germany), respectively |
