We synthesized PbSe/CdSe/CdS core/shell/shell nanocrystals with type II band offset and varied their morphology including sphere, pyramid, and tetrapod structure. In addition, we obtained metal-semiconductor nanohybrid by subsequently growing gold nanoparticles at the corners of the structure to promote photocatalytic performance for reduction of methylene blue. We observed that the morphology change leads to significant difference in photocatalytic efficiency. Tetrapods show the highest photocatalytic performance over that of pyramids and sphere. Since our heterostructures are based on PbSe core, we aimed to stretch photocatalysis out to infrared. We demonstrate that Au-tipped PbSe/CdSe/CdS nanocrystals exhibit exceptional photocatalytic activity in the visible and near infrared region out to 785 nm. Au-tipped tetrapod nanocrystals exhibited extraordinary photocatalytic activity even under 785 nm light with 70% methylene blue reduction for 4 h. |
