Electrically condicting polymers, especially polypyrrole (PPy), have attacted much attention for use in numerous bio-related applications since they serve as a potential platform for local delivery of electrical signals from or to targe tissue. Thus, design and incorporation of a range of extracellular cues into conducting polymers can allow for effective control over cell functions. For nerve regeneration scaffolds, three dimensional nanofibrous scaffolds were fabricated by nano-thick coating of PPy onto electrospun PLGA nanofibers. Electrical stimulation through the conducting nanofibers enhanced neurite outgrowth compared to unstrimulation controls. In addition, biocompatibility fo neural prosthetic probes was improved by passivating elecrodes with an electrically polymerizable pyrrole-conjugated hyaluronic acid. In vitro and in vivo studies have shown that modified electrodes minimally interacted with of reactive astrocytes. |
