Molecular design of novel pH and temperature block copolymer hydrogels |

PCL-PEG-PCL triblock copolymers were obtained by the ring-opening polymerization of ε-caprolactone(CL) using poly(ethylene glycol(PEG) as a macroinitiator in the presence of Sn(Oct)2. pH sensitive moieties such as poly(β-amino ester)(PAE) and poly(amido amine)(PAA) were introduced by Michael-type step polymerization. These triblock copolymer were acylated by acryloyl chloride, and then pentablock copolymers PAE/PAA-PCL-PEG-PCL-PAE/PAA were synthesized by addition polymerization from the acylated triblock copolymer with the mixture of PAE and PAA. The polymer composition was optimized for the appropriate sol(flow)-gel(non flow) transition. The weight ratio of PCL to PEG was controlled by adjusting the feed ratio, and triblock and pentablock copolymers were characterized by 1H-NMR spectroscopy and GPC. Aqueous media of the pentablock copolymers changed from a sol phase(flow) to a gel phase(non flow) with increasing temperature and pH. |
