The present study evaluates the applicability of novel two-step process for remediation of Cs-contaminated soil using magnetic particles to improve both the efficiency of separation of fine particles and soil washing. In the first step, the polyethyelenimine (PEI)-grafted Fe3O4 nanoparticles were selectively bonded to Cs-enriched clay particles, enabling their magnetic separation from soil. As a result of particle size distribution in the non-magnetic fraction, 99.4% was composed of sand particles, indicating that the most of fine particles were successfully removed. In the next step, the addition of magnetic adsorbent (Fe3O4@SiO2@KTiFC) to soil washing process significantly improved Cs desorption by preventing re-adsorption of Cs onto the sand, and thus resulting in further improvement of Cs desorption. Therefore, the use of magnetic particles for both clay separation and soil washing led to highly effective removal of Cs from soil. |
