The dimerization reaction of bicyclo[2,2,1]hepta-2,5-diene (norbornadiene) by a system of catalyst produce dimers of the norbornadiene which are ingredients of high density liquid fuels and lubricants. With the system of catalyst, which consist of iron (III) acetylacetonate, triphenylphosphine, and diethyl aluminium chloride, the endo-endo streoisomer of the hexacyclic dimer was obtained as a main product with excellent selectivity and conversion. Interestingly, AlCl3 can act as a promoter when added a small amount to the three-component catalytic system. |
