Supramolecular Complexes of a Water-Soluble Cyclodextrin Polymer and Paclitaxel and Their Anticancer Effect |

Paclitaxel is one of the important and effective anticancer drugs for the treatment of various types of cancers, especially, ovarian and breast cancer. On the other hand, the current formulation for the intravenous administration in a non-aqueous vehicle may cause allergic reactions and precipitation on aqueous dilution because of the hydrophobicity and insolubility in aqueous media. In order to overcome these problems, a cyclodextrin polymer was synthesized for the employment of the supramolacular concept. In this study, it was found that the formulated complexes of paclitaxel and the cyclodextrin polymer using a solid-state reaction showed a higher water-solubility and a higher anticancer effect on two cancer cell lines such as a human breast cancer and human lung cancer cell line compared to the paclitaxel-cyclodextrin complex as well as the pristine paclitaxel. |
