In this study, chemical resistance of high density polyethylene geomembranes (smooth and textured surfaces) in notched and un-notched forms treated under different pH values and 20-80°C range are experimented by tensile tests and stress crack resistant tests. Yielding and breaking loads and elongations are higher in un-notched samples. Yielding loads decrease with temperature, acidic and alkaline pH values and exposure time. Yielding elongations increase with temperature, but no good correlations show with pH values. Breaking loads also decrease with temperature and show no significant correlation with pH variations. Breaking elongations do not show good correlation to temperature and pH variations. Stress crack resistance is independent of pH variations, but, significantly depends on temperature. It is negatively correlated to exposure time. Only the notched samples showed micro cracks on their surfaces under applied tensions. |
