The need for sensitive, rapid, and portable identification devices for environmental toxicants have been enormous due to increased individual’s interest in personal health care and rigid governmental demand for environmental policies. We have developed a simple microfluidic chip for colorimetric sensing for harmful chemicals such as heavy metal ions and toxicants. The microfluidic chip consists of 3D structured PDMS channels, silica particles and fluorescent probes. Pillars in PDMS microfluidic channels generated micro-vortex instead of laminar flowing. 3D corrugated surfaces with high surface area induced by immobilization of silica particles improved efficient interaction between probes and analytes. Fluorescent probes provide colorimetric signals via RGB color changes by interacting with various analytes. Initially, the use of porphyrin series with our chip will be studied as a probe for heavy metal ions. Furthermore, RGB color pattern change by metal ion binding will be discussed. |
