Synthesis and Characterization of Emulsion Polymerized Methyl Methacrylate (MMA)-Ethylene Glycol Methyl Ether Acrylate (EGMEA) Copolymer |

Copolymer particles of methyl methacrylate (MMA)-ethylene glycol methyl ether acrylate (EGMEA) were synthesized by emulsion polymerization using potassium persulfate (KPS) as an initiator and sodium dodecyl sulfate (SDS) as a surfactant. It was investigated that the EGMEA comonomer affects both surface charge and electrophoretic properties of the synthesized particles. The chemical structure and the size & shapes of the MMA/EGMEA copolymer particles were characterized using FT-IR spectroscopy and scanning electron microscopy (SEM), respectively. Electrophoretic light scattering (ELS) was also used to determine electrophoretic properties of the particles. It was found that the particles possess negative zeta potential in aqueous media. |
