Novel fluorene-phenothiazine-based alternating polymers, poly{9,9-dioctylfluorene-2,7-diyl-co-3,7-bis(2-phenyl-2-cyanovinyl)-10-hexylphenothiazine-4’,4’-diyl} (PFPTs), were synthesized by Suzuki coupling reaction from 2,7-bis(4,4,5,5-tetramethyl-1,3,2-dioxabororan-2-yl)-9,9’-dioctylfluorene and 3,7-bis(2-(4’-bromophenyl)-2-cyanovinyl)-10-hexylphenothiazine. These polymers were thermally stable and readily soluble in common organic solvents. The single layer LED devices fabricated from these polymers emitted pure red light. Their optical results, compared to the color of the light emitted by the homopolymer, poly(9,9-di-octylfluorene-2,7-diyl) (PDOF), could be tuned by incorporating comonomer (PCVPT) because the new and narrow energy band gaps were formed in copolymers. Especially, PFPT50 showed good EL properties and LED device performances – the maximum luminance was about 2500cd/m2 @ 9.5V and the luminance efficiency was 0.16cd/A @ 8.5V. Also, its color coordinates was (0.63, 0.36) that was very close to the NTSC standard red (0.66, 0.34). |
