One-pot purification and functionalization of single-walled carbon nanotube (SWNT) in a mild and non-destructive medium in polyphosphoric acid (PPA) was attempted with or without additional phosphorous pentoxide at various temperatures 130, 160, and 190 ℃. On the basis of elemental analysis, thermogravimatric analysis (TGA), Raman spectroscopy, and wide-angle x-ray scattering (WAXS), purification was indeed effective as judged by carbon content, residual amount above 600 ℃, Raman shift, and x-ray intensity. The purity of mild acid treated SWNT was further ascertained by scanning electron microscopy (SEM), transmission electron microscopy (TEM), inductively coupled plasma (ICP). By using purified SWNT was functionalized in the same reaction medium and its direct chemical modification with 4-substituted benzoic acids was also successful. Thus, the system is able to do both purification and functionalization of SWNT with minimum or no damage at the same time. |
